Texas Historic Landmark Registration

Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks (RTHLs) are properties judged to be historically and architecturally significant. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) awards RTHL designation to buildings at least 50 years old that are judged worthy of preservation for their architectural and historical associations. For more information on RTHLs, please visit our website.

Information explaining the application process and guidelines can be found on the following THC webpage.  Our application period for the round 2011 marker is September 1 – November 15.  The application will be available on our website the first week of August.  Please see last year’s application for review.

In order to get a head start on the process, begin to research and draft the required narrative, A Marker Research Guide for Buildings and Structures. The guide will explain the types of information required and where the documentation can be found. The guide also includes a sample narrative.  Please review Marker Types Flyer to choose the preferred marker.

The completed application must be submitted on your behalf to the Tarrant County Historical Commission ( Tarrant CHC), so it will help greatly to get in touch with them early in the process, as they may have their own requirements and deadlines for the process. The Tarrant CHC Chair is Susan Taylor and all application materials must be submitted to THC electronically, by email. Hard copy applications are not accepted. The Tarrant CHC may be able to help you to track down documentation sources in the area and can also guide you in putting together the application packet.
